Firefighter Tattoo Policy:
Can Firefighters Have Tattoos?

Firefighting is an extremely important and also dangerous job. Firefighters play an important role in keeping people safe and saving lives during emergencies.

So, can a firefighter have a tattoo?

The answer is yes. The firefighter may have tattoos.

There are many occupations in which employers generally do not accept tattoos or piercings, such as teachers, flight attendants, or doctors.

As for firefighters, piercings won’t often be accepted. It is simply because firefighters may likely be exposed to high temperatures. Most piercings are metal jewelry that conducts heat. Therefore, they are not favored for this job. In contrast, there are no health or safety concerns associated with tattoos when you are a firefighter.

However, tattoos in exposed areas of the body are usually covered up when firefighters are on duty. There are many reasons behind this, but for most fire departments, the reality is that you are representing the face of the department. Therefore, hiding tattoos with personal opinions will avoid unnecessary misunderstanding situations with citizens.

The Reason Why
A Firefighter’s Tattoo Is A Potential Problem

Firefighters are allowed to have tattoos. But the fact that they are often asked to cover up makes tattoos a cause for concern. So what is the reason for this regulation?

1. Images that may offend others

As we said earlier, the main reason why fire stations don’t want their employees to show tattoos is that these employees are representing the fire department.

Revealing tattoos can cause many misunderstanding situations when people often misunderstand the images. Even simple and innocent images can be interpreted as offensive. It can affect the image of the whole fire department.

  • Religious conflict

Religious factors often influence situations that are offensive because of the presence of tattoos. There are misconceptions about some tattoos and symbols directly related to a cult. Some firefighters will also have to be careful that their tattoos are not gang-related, racist, or homophobic.

  • Adult content

As a firefighter, you will work with people of all ages, including children. Keeping the image of a friendly and helpful character is essential. Therefore, tattoos with adult content, such as swear words or sexually explicit images, will always need to be covered.

  • Antiquated view of professionalism in public service

In modern society, there are still many people who still have the old view that tattooing is unprofessional. It happens not only to the people but also to many colleagues in the fire department. Younger members of the force will protest this and say we need to get rid of these stereotypes. Each tattoo carries a deep meaning, so there is no reason for soldiers to hide them out of shame and discrimination.

Firefighter Tattoo Policy While On Duty

So, can firefighters reveal their tattoo while on a mission?

As we mentioned before, most fire departments will expect their employees to cover their tattoos when they are on duty. However, there’s no general rule about this. So it’s up to each fire agency to expect their staff to do this.

Some departments have relaxed regulations to attract dedicated personnel, while others have remained tough on the rules.

In general, the methods most fire authorities recommend for covering tattoos include:

  • Cover leg tattoos at all times while on duty with long pants.
  • Cover sleeve/half sleeve tattoo with a long-sleeve shirt while on duty.
  • Use bandages/patches to cover any tattoos that may appear on the arms/necks.

These rules are a compromise that works for most firefighters but not all. Many firefighters pointed out that they couldn’t roll up their sleeves on a hot day because civilians would then be able to see their tattoos. Some still feel as though they are being unfairly punished for lifestyle choices that don’t affect their work. This firefighter tattoo policy seems to be infringing on the individual freedom of expression of these people.

Otherwise, if you’re training to be a firefighter and have a tattoo, you don’t have to worry. Apprentice firefighters do not face any discrimination in employment opportunities just because they have tattoos.

Is This Firefighter Tatto Policy
Likely To Change In The Future?

For the younger generations, tattooing is a very common thing and there is nothing to prohibit it. While there is no clear indication that the fire service is likely to change its mind, in some places the firefighter tattoo policy has been relaxed to put firefighters at ease when on duty.

One such case happened at the Montgomery fire department in July 2019. An officer named Alex Cecil added tattoos on his arm to depict moments from his career. For seven years, he and his other comrades had to wear long sleeves in hot weather to hide their artwork. As a result, their local Director of Public Safety reversed the policy to allow them to wear short sleeves.

However, this does not mean that fire stations around the country are changing their ways. There will be a day when the change will occur on a large scale, although it is still very far away. Even then, it is not acceptable to have offensive, erotic, or curse words tattoos.

Don’t give up hope for the future! The tattoo issue for firefighters will no longer be subject to unnecessary discrimination and harsh opinions!

In conclusion, it’s perfectly possible for a firefighter to have a tattoo. However, people don’t usually greet these tattoos there.

In most fire departments, firefighters with tattoos will have to cover themselves at all times while on duty. In contrast, fire stations cannot discriminate against potential firefighters simply because they have tattoos.
